Caverject – Alprostadil Injection for Erectile Dysfunction
Caverject is a brand name for Alprostadil, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED)
The active ingredient, Alprostadil, is a synthetic form of prostaglandin E1, which helps relax blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow. This injectable treatment is usually recommended for men who do not respond to oral medications like Viagra or Cialis.
How Caverject Works
Caverject is injected directly into the corpora cavernosa of the penis, the two columns of erectile tissue. Once injected, Alprostadil begins working within 5 to 20 minutes, and the erection usually lasts for 30 to 60 minutes. It works by increasing the flow of blood to the penis, enabling an erection to occur naturally in response to sexual arousal.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of Caverject is individualized based on the patient’s response to the medication. It is typically injected at the base or side of the penis. Doctors will guide the patient in determining the correct dosage and technique for injection to minimize side effects and maximize effectiveness.
Caverject should not be used more than once a day and no more than three times a week. Patients are advised to follow their healthcare provider’s instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective use.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medications, Caverject can cause side effects. Some common side effects include pain at the injection site, prolonged erection (priapism), and swelling of the penis. Although rare, more serious side effects may include dizziness, fainting, or an allergic reaction.

Who Should Use Caverject?

Patients should not use Caverject if they have certain conditions, such as a history of penile deformities, severe cardiovascular conditions, or a history of priapism.
